Opening of Entwined Histories, North Vancouver Museum and Archives and Squamish Nation
On January 25th, the exhibit Entwined Histories: Gifts from the Maisie Hurley Collection will open at the North Vancouver Museum (Presentation House). This exhibit is remarkable as the first curatorial partnership between the North Vancouver Museum and Archives and the Squamish Nation. It was curated by Dr. Sharon Fortney and Damara Jacobs, and beautifully conveys the deep relationship that Maisie and Tom Hurley developed with the Squamish people, and her profound influence on the state of Aboriginal rights and title in British Columbia and across Canada.
I have produced a video of oral histories about Maisie Hurley and her legacy for the exhibit called “Ongoing Legacies: Maisie Hurley, Her Work and Influence”, which features interviews with Squamish elder Nekwnákwelut (Barbara Charlie), Justice Tom Berger, artist Kwetsímet (Keith Nahanee), artist Sesémya (Tracy Williams), and Dr. Phil Nyutton. The video can be viewed through the course of the exhibit, which will conclude at Presentation House in November, 2011.
