Examples of ‘Responses’ to artworks

Last week as we were leaving the Surrey Art Gallery I mentioned that I would post some examples of responses to art works. Borderzones was the inaugural exhibition in the Museum of Anthropology’s new Audain Gallery, back in 2010. The curators invited artists and academics to respond to each of the featured works. I was asked to write about John Wynne’s Anspayaxw (which was also shown at the Surrey Art Gallery this past year). I remember the challenge of spending time with the work, and also the privilege of talking with John to learn about his process and some of the more complex details of the piece. Together, I think the essays are nice examples of diverse writing approaches to  respond to artworks. For the seminar assignment, I am hoping for a description of the work you have chosen, some reflection on the readings we have connected with so far, and for you to convey a personal response to the work. I will make sure we have some time on Friday to discuss your response papers and answer any questions you might have.
