Human unlearning

Just a quick post: this video came to my mind when reading Adrienne Lafrance’s article on machine unlearning. By learning to ride a backwards bicycle, he unlearns how to ride a normal bicycle. The way he talks about the mind as an algorithm  resonates with Mead’s quote: “There is no trap of saying the human body is a machine, but merely that the methods, especially the the mathematics used in these machine problems, may be available tools for thinking more precisely about human behavior.”

  • Excellent example! How hard it is for humans to ‘unlearn’––I wonder, are our opinions and world views as hard-wired as our physicality?
